Guiding Questions: Proverbs 1

This is part of the Tanakh Yomi Project.

  1. What is the main thrust of Proverbs 1:2-6?
  2. In Proverbs 1:7, is there a more acceptable alternative to the translation “fear”? Why is this rendering problematic?
  3. What exactly is the import of Proverbs 1:7?
  4. Should “son” (Proverbs 1:8) be taken literally? If not, what does it signify? Why are no admonitions directed to a daughter?
  5. Are discipline and instruction merely adornments as Proverbs 1:9 appears to imply?
  6. Of what infraction are the “sinners” in Proverbs 1:10 ff. guilty? See Leviticus 19:14 and the Rabbinic interpretation.
  7. What is the meaning of Sheol (Proverbs 1:12) and in what context does it usually appear? (Cf. Genesis 37:35.)
  8. Proverbs 1:17 is somewhat ambiguous. What is the most reasonable interpretation?
  9. Would you agree that a modern counterpart to the lesson of Proverbs 1:19 is the familiar saying, “Crime does not pay”?
  10. Why is wisdom personified as a woman (Proverbs 1:20)?
  11. Wisdom’s admonition appears to have a prophetic resonance. How does it differ from a Prophet’s rebuke (Proverbs 1:21ff.)?
  12. Does Wisdom’s admonition have a contemporary application?
