Guiding Questions: Job 17

This is part of the Tanakh Yomi Project.

  1. Job continues his response begun in Job 16. Is a change in tone evident at the beginning of Job 17?
  2. Who are the “mocking men” to whom Job refers in Job 17:2?
  3. Whom is he addressing in Job 17:3?
  4. What does Job 17:5 mean and why is in enclosed in quotation marks in some translations?
  5. In Job 17:6 what is a “byword”? Why do other translations render “tofet” as “spittle”? or someone spat upon? Note the sound of “tofet”.
  6. Does Job have anyone in particular in mind when he refers to the “upright” and the “righteous man” (Job 17:8-9)?
  7. To whom is Job referring in Job 17:12 and of what does he accuse them?
  8. In expressing his utter despair, who are the “we” that will “go down together in the dust” (Job 17:16)?
